OOC - Tentative Syllabus for Keeping your Wits ...

Keeping your Wits about you: What to do when there's an emergency and you've only got yourself.

Objective: While it's nice to imagine that in an emergency situation you would have everything at your disposal to come out on top. The truth is, emergencies crop up where and when we least expect them and the only thing you can ever count on having with you are your wits. This class will teach students to become creative in their approach to various situations and how to be confident in their own ability to get out of any potential hazard that might come along.

There will be intense focus on the practical application of the techniques and methods studied in class with live exercises held in the Danger Room for some class periods.

Requirements:
IC: There will be two tests worth 15% each, a midterm worth 20%, the Final 25% and due to the heavy class participation of this course attendance and participation will be worth 25%.

OOC: Consider this your OOC warning that if your character does not at least sign in for class 3 times without an IC or OOC excuse, your character will be given detention. If you receive 2 such detentions (miss 6 classes without OOC or IC notification) your character will be graded DNF (F) in the course.

Handwavey of tests is acceptable but interaction is always love.

Here is Wilson’s voicemail or you can reach me at Seregill @ AOL Dot Com. I don’t bite I promise and all I need is a quick “real life eating me, can’t make class” and we’re all good. This information is also on my profile page if you need to get in contact with me.

Office Hours: Tuesdays 9:30am - 12:00pm and by appointment.

The Syllabus

Week 1 - Sept 3: The most important survival tool is the mind and the attitude it takes. This class will focus on orientation and introduction so that Dr. Wilson can aquire a baseline idea of everyones' natural abilities. Many of the exercises and scenarios in the Danger Room will be tweeked specifically for students to get the most out of the exercise so this is important.

Week 2 - Sept 10: Get creative, use your environment: Lecture will go over what can be found in a basic 'survival kit' but as this course is about having nothing, students will be presented with various scenarios where they will have to adapt every day items to fulfill the function of what would be in a 'kit'.

Week 3 - Sept 17: How to break down a door ... FANDOM style: By this point in the course, students should be aware that Fandom can be a bit ... unique and nothing is ever as it entirely seems. The exercise will challenge students to get around a door by applying thier wits to a riddle as chosen by the door.

Week 4 - Sept 24: How to escape a bad date: Keeping your cool in an emotionally charged situation. While it may sound silly, somethings the biggest challenges can involve handling a situation without hurting the other person.

Week 5 - Oct 1: Test # 1

Week 6 - Oct 8: Playing games with the Devil: There will be times when you will be faced with an adversary who has the advantage on you regardless of your strengths. How will you handle yourself when faced with such an opponant and force is not an option? There will be a Guest Speaker for this class

BREAK

Week 7 - Oct 22: You know more than you think: How to apply seemingly unrelated knowledge in an emergency situation. Students will be presented with a maze challenge and will have to decide what is their best course to escape. Diplomacy? Wile? Force?

Week 8 - Oct 29: How to survive a zombie epidimic: It's not only in Fandom that you could find this to be a problem.

Week 9 - Nov 5: MIDTERM

Week 10 - Nov 12: How to retrieve a candy bar stuck in a vending machine: Sometimes life's most complex puzzles come from the every day mundane tasks.

Week 11 - Nov 19: How to jump off of and back onto a moving train: Students will work in pairs for this exercise as sometimes your greatest asset in an emergency situation can be the person next to you.

Week 12 - Nov 26: Test # 2 (TBD - Practical?)

Week 13 - Dec 3: TBD

Week 14 - Dec 10: Review

Exam -Dec 17: FINAL

Well ... guess it does depend upon the person!

And maybe just how bad the date was.
